Operational excellence

Operational excellence and Lean for Quebec SMBs

SignalOrange helps small and mid-sized businesses in Quebec, on the shop floor and in the office, find the waste in their operations and remove it for good: value stream mapping, 5S, Kaizen weeks and continuous improvement routines. When the cause is software, we can fix that too, at a fixed price.

What we deliver

Find the waste, then remove it

A Lean firm identifies the waste, and part of it often comes from the tools: data entered twice, a report rebuilt by hand every week, software that forces a detour. At SignalOrange, the same team can also build the fix when the cause is software.

A value stream map

Value stream mapping (VSM) shows each step, the waiting between steps and the waste, with numbers on it. It is the basis for the 90-day plan.

Workstations in order

5S applies to one area of the shop floor or to an office: sort, set in order, shine, standardize, sustain. We leave visual standards behind and come back for an audit at 30 days.

Improvements made with the team

A Kaizen week brings together the people who do the work to solve one specific problem, in 3 to 5 days, with a follow-up at 30 days.

Routines that hold

Short daily meetings, visual boards and KPIs tracked in Power BI dashboards built by Julie Choquette.

The software fix, when needed

If the waste comes from a tool, we can fix it with custom development, or with Meridian, our CRM software for service businesses.

Where to start?

A Lean approach makes sense if

  • lead times keep growing and nobody knows where;
  • the same problem comes back every week, in the same area;
  • you want the team to keep the gains without a consultant on site.

It will not help if

  • you want a report without changing how the work is done;
  • managers cannot free up time for the routines.

Agile coaching

One team at a time, for three months

Agile coaching is for teams that deliver their work in projects or iterations. For 3 months, we coach one team in its real work.

Jacob Roy is a Professional Scrum Master (PSM I). Mathieu Lacombe, who has taught managers the basics of continuous improvement for more than 10 years, also does Agile coaching.

What the coaching covers

  • Clear roles and responsibilities in the team.
  • Short, regular meetings, each with a purpose.
  • A visual board of the work in progress.
  • Retrospectives that lead to a concrete change.

How it works

Assess, pilot, standardize, sustain

  1. Assess

    A 30-minute call, then the assessment: we watch the work where it happens and map the value stream.

  2. Pilot area

    We improve one area or one team first, with the people who work there, to show the gain before spreading it.

  3. Standardize

    What works becomes a visual standard, written and simple, that the team follows without us.

  4. Sustain

    Daily routines, audits and KPIs help the team keep the gain. We train the managers so they can take over.

Where does time go in your operations?

In 30 minutes, we look at your operations and tell you which package to start with, and at what fixed price.
